If you're gone tomorrow, does anyone know how things carry on?
A fall on the stairs. A diagnosis. Six weeks in hospital. Your business keeps running, just without you. Someone has to open up, but doesn't know where the keys are or who to call.
With the emergency plan you write it all down. For the people who'll be standing at your desk.

Before an emergency
For the emergency plan, what's usually missing is time
Most owners know they should have a plan for emergencies. Very few actually have one. Often it comes down to time, and perhaps to the templates being so extensive.
Yet it's about something very practical and still very important: getting the knowledge out of your head and onto paper before someone else needs it. No powers of attorney, no wills. Very simple things.
Who has the spare key? When does the supplier come? Which invoice must never be paid late?
In a small business, one or two people know this. Usually just one.
The result
A sheet of paper that helps your people
In the end you have a document that you print out and put in a folder. Two sheets, both sides. Not a manual.
You're not writing it for yourself. You're writing it for whoever has to step in at short notice.
Who to call first
Your three to five most important numbers, in the order they'll be needed.
Where are the important things kept?
Keys, folders, contracts, access. Not the passwords themselves, but where they're kept.
What must never be left undone?
The orders and deadlines of the coming weeks, with a note on who can take them over.
What's due every month
Wages, rent, statements, insurance premiums. And who already knows about them.
Who on the team can take over what?
Your people, with what they can handle on their own and what they can't.
Contacts on the outside
Your accountant, bank, landlord, and your most important customers and suppliers.
Your data
None of it ever reaches us
An emergency plan holds things that concern only you and the people in your business. That's why we built the tool so that your entries never reach us in the first place.
Your entries stay on your own device. They aren't transmitted to us, so we can't see them either. When you're done, you print the sheet and can then delete everything from your device with one click.
The emergency plan never asks for a password, a code or a PIN. Only for who knows them.
What it is and what it isn't
A signpost, not a power of attorney
The emergency plan says where things are and how they usually run. It doesn't settle who may decide on your behalf. That's a separate matter and belongs with your fiduciary, notary or lawyer.
Who may decide for you is arranged with a dedicated power of attorney. In Switzerland that's the Vorsorgeauftrag, in Germany and Austria the Vorsorgevollmacht. Without it, in an emergency an authority decides who acts for you, and that takes time. Your family may not do so automatically. Get advice from professionals on this.
The emergency plan doesn't protect you. It keeps your business running, because the person who then steps in knows what to do and where everything is.
A side effect
The emergency plan is a good foundation
Once you've filled in the six blocks, you may see for the first time just how much rests on you. You see who could carry on alone and who couldn't, and what needs to be sorted if you're out for two weeks.
Later, a prospective buyer will want to know much of this too. Then you won't just have it in your head, you'll already have it written down.
When the time eventually comes, on BIZZqui you'll find someone who wants to take over a business like yours. Discreetly and at your own pace.
The emergency plan is a small but important start, whether or not you ever sell.
